START IMPROVISING ON PIANO IN 35 DAYS

Piano Liberation Workshop is a cohort-based, online music course that teaches you the fundamentals of improvising freely with the piano.

But unlike other music courses, you won’t learn passively — you’ll compose 10+ pieces of music, build lifelong friendships, and leave with a new perspective for what is possible on the piano.

The current March 29th cohort, a 5-week course, is sold out.

Playing piano should be as intuitive as when we were given crayons and paints as kids.

Whether you are...

• a total beginner who’s never played an instrument
• classically trained and want to develop impro + groove
• an experienced musician curious about new approaches
• a music-lover who once took lessons, then stopped (that was me 🙋🏻‍♂️)

...I’d love to introduce you to the fastest (and most fun) way of exploring that I’ve found. I’ll not only give you maps, a tent, and a compass — but also self-sustaining skills so that you can build your own fires, and flourish out in the wilderness.

Together in a group, we will try many new things, iterate quickly, and share our creations (if you’d like).

After the 5-week course, you’ll be familiar with the piano as a cozy place to roam freely.

Welcome to Piano Liberation Workshop

Here’s how it works

Learn the fundamentals of piano improvisation

On the surface, Piano Liberation Workshop is a course teaching you how to explore freely and unleash your musical ideas.

Upon joining, you’ll unlock a 5-week curriculum packed with frameworks that guarantee you become a prolific improviser.

• 📹 10 Live Sessions covering everything you need to know to unlock the piano as an infinitely creative tool

• 🏝️ 25 Quick Adventures you can try on the piano keys to generate new ideas

• ✍️ 10+ improvisation assignments that lead to your creation of new musical pieces

• 🧠 Weekly Q&A sessions to reinforce everything you’ve learned (and make sure nobody gets left behind)

• 🧨 BONUS ACCESS to all future Piano Liberation Workshop learning materials (if you book a free introductory call to say hello, for us to discuss how the course will be most useful for you!)

Put your learnings into practice by playing and recording over 35 days

Other piano courses charge you thousands of dollars, only to wave their hands in the air with “philosophies.”

And by the end, you leave with a bunch of “inspiring” notes that sit in a folder for eternity. Meanwhile, you’re still confused and unsure about the next step to take.

But Piano Liberation Workshop is about taking action, trying stuff quickly, and keeping a tight feedback loop.

You will explore and compose 10 pieces (at minimum) from your own creative findings, over the 5-week course.

In just 35 days, you’ll record a playlist of music — enough to release as an album! — that builds your confidence and serves as the foundation for months, if not years of future creative expression.

That’s because you’ll be learning not only new techniques, but also the frameworks for creating your own avenues for continuous exploration.

Hello From Your Piano Liberation Coach!

Eric Pan

Hello! I’ve been teaching jazz piano for over a decade now, learning from my one-on-one students the best ways to help them access the freedom of open improvisation from the body and heart.

For many years, my teaching was focused through the lenses of jazz, gospel, and R&B, but I gradually came to recognize that a significant crowd of students was also interested in improvisation agnostic of genre, or adaptable across a wider variety of styles.

This led me to begin developing an approach I’d not seen before.

In New York City, I’ve had the tremendous fortune to study with legends such as Bruce Barth, Sophia Rosoff, Barry Harris, and John Patitucci — over time, I found I was already assimilating the teaching styles that I admired, to form a new pathway that worked well for seasoned jazz cats as well as complete beginners to the piano.

I’m now distilling those insights into the Piano Liberation Workshop, the first-ever piano course focused on Liberation — the feeling of freedom in both senses of the word: in boundless creation, and also with one’s creative energy unshackled.

And not only Liberation, but also the actionable tools you need to develop your skills, nuke limiting beliefs, and discover new ways of creating — beyond whatever your capacity is at any current moment — so that you’ll always have new frontiers to explore.

Better yet, the course is designed for groups, so we all get to learn together with mutual support and camaraderie.

I’m excited to build this course with you — March 29th will be the first cohort — so do reach out! I’ve chosen a significant discount for this initial course, and would welcome a quick introductory call with you to learn what would be most helpful for you.

To thank you for booking a (free, optional) call, I’ll give you access to all future course materials and assignments, alongside the inevitable improvements they’ll undergo for future cohorts.

We’re just getting started.

And I’d love to have you on board.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does this cost?

Other courses charge upwards of $6,000 to guide you through the fundamentals of improvisation — and without a focus on actionable results, community, or, well...piano liberation.

But my goal with this workshop is to keep it accessible while still charging enough to keep you accountable.

The full price of the course is currently $216 (€200) for the first cohort.

Can I gift enrollment?

Absolutely! And what a tremendous gift indeed.

To do so, simply enroll using your email address.

Then, send an email to “hello@pianoliberation.com” with the subject line GIFT TRANSFER REQUEST and I will send further instructions.

What’s the time commitment?

Life is busy. I know you don’t have time to play piano all day.

With short piano explorations, you need spend no more than 15 minutes playing each day.

But this 15-minute habit of trying a new skill daily is the highest leverage type of routine.

On top of the daily playing, there are 2 live sessions each week, an hour each:

The first one takes place on Friday, March 29th. Through four weeks in April, we will have live sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays in the UTC evening. The exact time is still to be announced, but UTC evening-time is ideal for attendance from students across the world.

If you can’t attend the live sessions, they’ll be recorded for you to access when you’re free, and at any time in the future.

Is this also for people who sing or play other instruments?

Many of the topics covered will be piano-specific, since we are treating the piano as a physical landscape to explore.

However, the majority of topics covered are about connecting musically to one’s instrument, so musicians who are already familiar with their instrument are encouraged to join as well.

If I don’t like it, can I request a refund?

Yes — check out the refund policy for how to qualify for a 100% refund.

Couldn’t I just do this on my own?

Well... you could. And I encourage you to try it! Because if it works for you, great!

But chances are, you have tried or contemplated trying playing on your own before. And between the hours it would take you to find and aggregate all of the free stuff and the headaches developed from deciding what to play each day on your own...

I think the $500 $216 is worth it.

Will I have access to the course materials after it ends?

Absolutely. I recommend you download everything including the live sessions if you miss them, but they will also be hosted by me and accessible to all enrolled students, forever.

What if I have never touched a piano before?

That’s totally fine! In fact, improvising on piano from scratch is the ideal way to explore music creation. When you enroll, I’ll send you a link to some resources to familiarize yourself with basics. If you can check them out before the course begins, you’ll be good to go.

What if I can’t attend the live sessions?

The live session videos will be made available immediately after they end, so if you miss them, you’ll be able to catch up on your own time, download them, etc.

I mainly want to learn music theory and jazz (or other styles)...would I benefit from this course?

Many of the concepts for open-ended improvisation are also applicable when playing musical languages and dialects, so the answer to this question depends:

If you are supplementing this course with additional exposure to the styles of music you wish to learn, it could be very helpful — and if you enroll, I’d be thrilled to send you recommendations specific to your goals.

However, if you are looking for a “complete package” to learn specific musical approaches, I recommend signing up for the email waitlist for announcements of upcoming, more targeted courses.

What if I am already an experienced improviser?

That’s fantastic and we would be honored to have you! Piano Liberation Workshop is not only about sharing information and helpful practices for unlocking improvisatory excellence — it’s even more about doing, in particular trying new things together.

In other words, even if you already understand all the concepts I’ll present in the course, improvisation is unpredictable (as you know), so new things will inevitably arrive.

But best of all, I’ll give you frameworks for how to move forward and discover your own “next frontiers” at any stage you find yourself — now, and into the future.

Can I join the email list if I’m not ready to sign up for the course yet?

Definitely! Here is the email waitlist:

I want your Piano Liberation Workshop investment to be 100% risk free.

So, if you try the course materials and find the course isn’t for you within 14 days of starting it, I will refund 100% of your investment.

And if you find after enrolling that your schedule is busier than you thought, I will roll you forward into a future cohort at zero additional cost.

However, part of what makes Piano Liberation work is the financial accountability. If you do not engage with the course materials or fail to take action during the course, this does not qualify for a refund.

Quiz: Is Piano Liberation Workshop right for you?

Have you wanted to start improvising, but aren’t sure the first step to take?

Are you overwhelmed by the number of piano videos, styles, and strategies out there for learning improvisation?

Have you tried improvising before, but now feel stuck?

Are you running your hands over the piano keys, retreading known paths or simply not connecting musically?

Do you have plenty of ideas, but struggle to express them through the instrument?

Have you found yourself sitting down at the piano, wishing you could unlock the ideas that you know are within you, yearning to be let out?

The precise tools and constraints you need to start improvising freely.

All beginner improvisers face the same 10 problems:

distractions
expectations
self-confidence
procrastination
no time to create
feelings of pressure
don’t know what to do
too late to start learning
practice is boring or lonely
nothing sounds good (except old ideas)

Demolish any limiting beliefs still lingering around.

There are 3 killers of great musical improvisation.

Bad habit #1 : Believing you can’t

Have you ever worried you’re not musical enough, creative enough, coordinated enough, or you’re too old to learn piano improvisation? Together, we’ll discover that these beliefs can be rewired, empowering you to discover a universe of limitless possibilities.

Bad habit #2 : Overthinking + Judgment

So many talented musicians think success is about having the best ideas. It’s not. Over decades of teaching, I’ve learned the best ideas come as a RESULT of exploring a TON of options. Which means not overthinking the process.

Bad habit #3 : Falling out of practice

As soon as you skip a day of playing, it becomes easier the next day to skip again. Skip enough days in a row, and you’ll forget you ever had a regular piano habit in the first place. Getting started (or started “again”) is the HARDEST part for aspiring musicians.

Three aspects of Piano Liberation Workshop help you with this: the exercises are simple and require as little as 5-minute intervals; the course welcomes you no matter what level you’re at, even if you are learning from scratch; and most wonderfully: we are in it together, regular and accountable, setting you up for a fun new habit for 35 days and beyond.

No more staring blankly at the keys.

I totally get it: you know that there is an unlimited number of things to play on the piano, but...accessing them?

There’s simply too many choices and you don’t know where to start.

Worse yet, looking for tutorials online leads to an overwhelming bounty of options — none of which address exactly where you are, now.

The solution? To empower you with your own tools for creation and exploration. We’ll throw around fun, bite-sized ideas to try, make lots of noise and then see what happens.

With guidance from the course, direct feedback on your progress, and support from your fellow creators, overthinking gets thrown out the window.

Compose 10+ pieces of music in 35 days.

There are many ways to learn a new skill, but reading about theory & planning to get started are the worst.

The Piano Liberation Workshop directly drops us off at the ocean for immediate immersion: you’ll be given templates to explore new approaches on the piano, and get to hear what others — myself included — are creating.

(You are free to decide whether to share what you’ve made, each time.)

By the end of the course, you’ll emerge with a portfolio of new creations — better yet, a repository of ideas and techniques for expanding your own horizons, continually, into the future.

Stop repeating.
Start creating.

Let’s be honest.

The easiest things to play are the things you know already. Performing for others is no fun if you’re stumbling around forgotten territory. When you’re alone, those piano songs still feel great to revisit.

In improvisation, too, known pathways are simpler. It takes time to build new skills and new ways of speaking.

What we need is a way to bake the discovery process into your piano time. So that exploration feels natural and not “lesser” to playing music you’ve played before.

It could even become the opposite.

Photo of piano

Gain confidence. Connect with music-lovers. Build a library of your own music.

I’ve had students go on to build audiences with thousands of raving fans. Others went on to teach universities, tour and release albums, even consult Fortune-500 companies on effortless creativity.

I’m most proud when students have told me they performed a composition for a loved one and it meant something special.

Whatever your goals are for improvisation, the Piano Liberation Workshop will get you there, faster.

Form lifelong friendships with like-minded explorers.

Practicing piano can feel lonely. But, it doesn’t have to be.

The internet has made it easy to find others just like you.

Inside Piano Liberation Workshop, you’ll learn alongside a group of others from other time zones, continents, backgrounds, and professions.

And the best part? Every one of them has the same goals as you:

To start playing, freely and creatively.

Stop overthinking.
Finally start improvising in 2024.

One last thing...

If you’re down here, you might be thinking... is this really worth it?

And sure, you could definitely gather youtube tutorials, start the search for a great teacher in your area, and collect the writings and videos I’ve put out on this subject.

But I’m guessing that if you’re on this page, and you’ve read this far, you’ve tried something like this before.

And the results... well... they’re not what you’ve been hoping for.

Do you remember when we were given crayons as kids, and how it felt to just...color?

I believe in having the same relationship with the piano. Improvisation is about making your own tools to create with total abandon, yet to speak something true.

Wouldn’t it be magical to look back at the end of 2024, pointing to this moment, this exact decision, as the thing that led to an incredible, life-changing year?

Connecting with loved ones, learning songs that you love (by ear), starting a band, de-stressing, going deep into musical communion, putting out your own vinyl...all from the simple habit of playing the piano.

And it can all start right here, right now.

So, what do you say?
